Skateboard association encouraging “swift reopening” of skate park

MEDICINE HAT, AB- With skaters prohibited from using the city’s skateboard park for nearly two months, The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association is encouraging a “swift” reopening to get more people skating on their boards.

“The kids are having a hard time with this pandemic and not getting physical exercise and it is good for your mental health to get outside and somewhat socializing,” Chris Nickel, president of the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association said.

Skateboard parks are slated to open May 29, along with playgrounds– a date Nickel says he is content with.

“I mean yes we are happy that it is going to be open. It would be nice if it was open today it is a beautiful day out but I understand there red tape the city has to go through and precautions that need to be taken,” he said.

But Nickel argues there are some distinct differences between playgrounds and skate parks that could justify a speedier reopening.

“One of them is the average age of the user is much higher. Also the obstacles aren’t hands on like monkey bars or swings are so there is little to no cross contamination,” he said.

Signage and barriers informing the public of its closure currently line the Inland Skateboard Park.

But as boarders begin to get rolling on their boards come Friday, Nickel is urging all users to use discretion so that the parks remain open for others to use.

“What we are suggesting is young kids not be dropped off at the skate park like it is a daycare. I mean bring some supervision, whether it is a parent, guardian, older brother, someone responsible just to remind them not to get too close to other people,” Nickel said

“I mean we want it to stay open, we don’t want to open it up and regret it,” Nickel added.
