Fire Service: Access to fire exits can’t be blocked

May 20, 2020 | 2:43 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Local business owners are being told not to forget about fire safety as they make adjustments to their premises to comply with physical distancing rules.

“All exits must remain accessible in the event of an emergency,” said Carter Gramlich, fire prevention officer with the Medicine Hat Fire Service.

The service has found that some businesses have inadvertently blocked fire exits while trying to adhere to other public health guidelines. Businesses can use signs to direct customers to one exit but can’t physically block an exit or access to one.

MHFS also reminds business owners that locks on exit doors must comply with code requirements and must be easily operable without requiring keys or special knowledge.
