Prairie Gleaners sends soup mix to Zambia

May 19, 2020 | 11:05 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Prairie Gleaners Society is continuing to do what it can to send food from southern Alberta to the other side of the world.

Early in April, Prairie Gleaners was asked to fill a 40-foot sea container bound for Zambia through Dynamic Churches International and Bare Feet Ministries in Saskatoon.

On May 7, Prairie Gleaners loaded the container with 11,988 bags of soup mix. Each bag holds enough mix for about 120 cups of soup.

β€œIn spite of the challenges we face here with the Covid19 Pandemic, it is rather exciting to see vegetables grown here in Southern Alberta feeding people in Africa,” says the group.

Bagging of the dehydrated vegetable mix will continue and the group may need another 20-foot sea container to help another couple of organizations.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Prairie Gleaners plant will remain closed to the public until at least June 1. It will be re-evaluated then, with adherence to guidelines from Alberta Health and Health Canada.
