Painter Girl’s new mural honours Evelyn, the mother of the building’s owner

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Everyone in Medicine Hat has passed by a Painter Girl creation at least once. They’re unmistakable, and her latest creation will be hard to miss.

This weekend, Painter Girl, also known as Christy Vince, is putting the finishing touches on The Evelyn. It adorns a building on the corner of North Railway and Braemar Street and Vince estimates it’s more than 40 feet wide and about 12 feet tall.

It’s being done at the request of the owner of the building, Kirsten Spek, as a way to honour her mother.

Spek will move her business, Couture Hair, to the building.

“Sunflowers were (Evelyn’s) favourite flower and her favourite colours were yellows and oranges so there’s a bunch of monarch butterflies gong in today,” said Vince, adding the name “Evelyn” will be at the top.

Heartbreaker Dance and Fitness and Spek’s husband’s concrete company will also be housed in the building, Vince said.

Many in the Hat likely took a painting class from Vince before COVID-19 put a kibosh on those. For the past couple of months she’s been doing them online.

“I needed to do something to get people to be not thinking about this bloody COVID,” she said.

She’s been doing a couple of sessions each week but will go down to one after the May long weekend.

The free sessions happen and are posted on Facebook, and she’s been offering kits at a nominal price to cover costs. Next week she’ll start charging a small fee, she said.

“People have been really excited and I’m hoping to get people that can’t come out or the public events.”
