Parade of students, families

Eagle Butte celebrates grads

DUNMORE, AB – Friday was originally set for the Eagle Butte High School graduation ceremony but with physical-distancing protocols in place due to COVID-19, the school celebrated the big day with a parade of cars loaded with grads and their family.

It wasn’t the grad ceremony students may have been looking forward to at the beginning of the school year, but principal Mark Heinricks says it was important to mark the occasion until pandemic protocols are lifted.

“It’s tough,” said Heinricks. “There are so many restrictions and so many things and this is such a big milestone for so many. They anticipate it and they wait for it and they can’t do the things that they want. Anything that we can do to help out with the celebration, we’re going to give a try.”

But if there is a silver lining to the whole pandemic, for student Josiah Klassen it will be he’ll have some advice when his future children find themselves in high school.

“Make sure to do your homework because I went through a pandemic and I made it,” said Klassen.

Eagle Butte hopes to have a more traditional graduation ceremony in the fall.
