Tax Season

Tax season as busy as ever for local businesses despite extended window

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadians are still in the middle of tax season from coast to coast.

The federal government has extended the window for when taxes must be filed, however that hasn’t slowed down business for local tax services.

Much like in years past, the Medicine Hat branch of Liberty Tax Service say they have been flooded by customers this month.

“We’ve been probably just as busy as we normally would be,” said tax preparer Britteny Dick. “We’re a little bit behind because the process that we have to go through takes us a little bit longer than if people were coming in for sit-down appointments.”

This year’s tax season is a bit different for local services, as there is no longer an April 30 tax deadline looming.

Canadians have now been given until June 1 to submit their tax documents to the Canada Revenue Agency, while the deadline to pay off a balance owed has been extended until August 31.

Despite the larger window for tax payers, Dick said most people she’s dealt with are still choosing to file ahead of the previous deadline.

“We feel like we’re still having people come in during the regular time when they normally would get their taxes done, especially people who are getting refunds,” she said. “If people normally owe, I think those people are going to push it off a little bit longer, especially because they don’t have to pay until a little bit later of a date. But, most cases we’re still finding people are getting their taxes done on time.”

The recommendation from Dick and other tax preparers is for parents to file sooner rather than later, as a longer lead-up allows more time for this summer’s child tax benefit to be paid out.

“If you get taxes done early, it gives them enough time to process how much you’re going to qualify for in July,” said Dick.
