MEDICINE HAT AB.- With a birthday hat strapped to her head, Myrtle Johnston likely assumed that her 91st birthday would be a quiet one.

But staff at Masterpiece Southland Meadows had a different idea.

Breaking out in song and handing her a candle, it was a celebration, and appearing on screen was her daughter Pat Kimber from Saskatchewan along with her grandson .

“It was awesome I really appreciated what they done,” said daughter Pat Kimber in a phone interview with CHAT News Today

KImber lives an hour and a half from Medicine Hat and used to see her mom every Friday to get coffee, play cards, and spend quality time together.

“Mom is really upbeat she doesn’t really sit around she tries to make the best of everything she’s a pretty easy keeper in terms of care.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the province imposed strict regulations on visits to long-term care facilities to one essential visitor, making birthday parties like these where families can get together a seemingly impossible task without the help of technology.

It’s a creative way the facility is forging a connection with family during unprecidented circumstances, that are weighing heavily on many seniors including Myrtle.

“She gets lonely she does. She looks forward to our visits and it’s really hard when we can’t go,” explained Kimber.

“The night before last she was really down because she said she doesn’t know how much longer she’s going to take this not being able to see us,” Kimber said

Still, despite the limitations, Kimber said she has the utmost gratitude for the care facility for going above and beyond to allow them to see each other even from a virtual lens.

“ They’re just phenomenal, the whole place we are just really pleased, “ Kimber said.
