Apr 6, 2020 | 6:56 PM

UPDATE — Medicine Hat Police Service cleared and re-opened Police Point Park around 9 p.m., following what they called a high-risk incident early Monday evening.

Police were called to Police Point Drive N.E. around 6:20 p.m. on Monday.

Police were told by multiple people that they had seen a man with a firearm. Members of the tactical team utilized the Armoured Rescue Vehicle and a drone to assist in searching the area for the male subject

The male was eventually located in a tent near the river bed. The male was cooperative and surrendered to police without incident. A search of the area turned up some loaded and spent ammunition as well as illegal drugs.

Staff Sgt. Rod Thompson said a second firearm was found Tuesday morning.

“We attended back to the park this morning and numerous members of the service assisted with doing a fairly intense search in finding the firearm and they were successful in finding two long-barelled firearms.”

“I can tell you that the suspect is in custody on numerous breech of release order charges, as well as possession of a controlled substance that being methamphetamine, and in addition to that he is going to be facing several firearms charges.”

Thompson says police don’t know at this time if the suspect was homeless.

“There’s no indication as to how long he had been living there at this point and time. But that’s part of our investigation we are trying to determine that.”

A 26-year-old male is held in custody and is facing a number of criminal charges including breach of conditions and drug possession as well as the firearms charges. The matter is still under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the man with the firearm to contact police at 403-529-8481.
