Trudeau says too many Canadians are still going out when they don’t need to

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spent much of his morning address to the country telling Canadians it’s up to them to determine how long the COVID-19 pandemic will continue.

“You must listen to the world class doctors who are always sharing the best and latest information and advice,” he said. “It’s up to you to do the right thing.”

Trudeau warned about the potential future dangers of not listening to the advice of the experts

He says “we must do everything we can today and tomorrow to set us on the right path,” so hospitals aren’t overwhelmed in the coming weeks.

“We can save lives together by staying apart,” he said.

Trudeau also didn’t discount the possibility of a mandatory stay-at-home order. He said that would be part of the Emergencies Act “that could be brought in,” though added the provinces are taking the lead on the matter.

Speaking outside Rideau Cottage, the prime minister also highlighted the collaboration between the federal government and the provinces and industry. He says more than 10 million masks have been shipped out in recent days or will be soon. Trudeau also says the government has ordered hundreds of thousands of face shields from hockey equipment manufacturer Bauer.

Trudeau had little to say on releasing more data on things such as modelling and testing. He will be meeting with premiers later today and said more information would be shared soon.

Lastly, he was asked about having cleared his throat a couple of times during the address. He said his health is just fine and that perhaps he should wear a scarf more often.

As of Thursday, Canada has 10,114 confirmed cases, 18 probable cases and 127 deaths. There have been 256,933 Canadians tested.

In Alberta there are 871 cases and 11 deaths. A total of 53,141 Albertans have been tested.
