Southern Express’ Pierson named league MVP in rookie season

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Kendal Pierson’s exception first season of midget hockey is being recognized at the provincial level, taking home a pair of prestigious awards on Monday.

The Southern Express sniper was crowned Alberta Female Hockey League MVP for the Midget Elite level, while also taking home league Rookie of the Year honours.

Pierson exploded in her first season with the Midget Elite Southern Express, leading the league in both goals and points as a 16 year old posting 25 goals and 42 points in just 23 games.

The rookie also ended the regular season on an 11-game point streak, before helping the Southern Express to a first round playoff series victory over the Airdrie Lightning.

The Southern Express were set to face Calgary Fire White in the second round of playoffs before the remainder of the season was eventually cancelled due to COVID-19.

Pierson’s head coach James King was also recognized by the AFHL on Monday, as he picked up Coach of the Year honours after leading the Southern Express to a 14-9-3 record in regular season play.

As for the Bantam Elite Southern Express, they were bounced in their opening round series against the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs in three games.
