Birthday Drive By group making special memories

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat group is hitting the streets to put smiles on the faces of birthday boys and girls.

To celebrate the special days from a distance, Amber-rose Goreham created Covid-19 Birthday Drive By – Medicine Hat on Facebook last week. People can message the group about an upcoming birthday, group administrators create an event and members can be part of a caravan that does a drive by at a scheduled time.

The group is more than 400 strong as of Friday afternoon.

“Within the first three days we had over 30 people message us to get their children’s birthdays added,” Goreham says, adding about five to 10 new requests are made each day.

The response has been off the charts.

“There’s been a couple of parents who’ve messaged me and said their kids started crying because people remembered their birthday and they felt like it wasn’t forgotten. I’ve seen videos of kids jumping up and down,” Goreham says. “They feel like they have their own parade.”

Anyone who wants to have a birthday –­ even an adult’s –­ added can make a request through the Facebook group.
