Pet adoptions continue during COVID-19 precautions

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The response of COVID-19 precautionary measures is impacting people and pets in ways we might have not considered.

Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre’s (APARC) Volunteer Operations Supervisor Samuel Sandidge says they are still processing adoptions and making sure animals have a place to go.

He says they had to stop public visits at this time, but are still receiving lost and found pets.

Sandidge says they recently had a situation where someone had to relinquish their pet that they previously adopted from APARC.

“They explained that they needed to provide better care for a family member. And the reason why they had to do that was because the family member that needed care couldn’t acquire suitable care due to the restrictions that hospitals and other clinics are facing from the COVID-19 response.”

He says, all adoptable animals are online, and prospective applicants can make an arrangement to visit the shelter.

As far as animal intake, Sandidge says their capacity seems to be okay right now and APARC continues to get support from local businesses.
