City closes recreation facilities, Esplanade due to COVID-19

MEDICINE HAT, AB.-Just minutes after the province’s chief medical officer announced sweeping measures in the wake of COVID-19,the City of Medicine Hat has announced the closure of its recreation facilities effective at the end of the day today, (March.15).

The Family Leisure Centre, Crestwood Recreation Centre, Hockey Hounds Arena, Moose Recreation Centre and the Kinplex will be closed until further notice.

The Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre will also close.

The Veiner and Strathcona Centres will not operate until further notice.

“As always, the safety of our patrons, our community and our staff remains our top priority in initiating this precautionary measure. We thank you for your understanding,” the city said in a statement.

Earlier today the province announced the closure of all K-12 schools, post secondary institutions and daycare centres, with the exception of day homes with less than seven children.

Seventeen additional cases were announced, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 56 in the province.

The city of Medicine Hat will have update it’s plans in an 11 o’clock news conference Monday at city hall.
