MEDICINE HAT, AB – With just five games left before playoffs, the Medicine Hat Tigers and the WHL’s 21 other clubs have been pulled off the ice.

The Canadian Hockey League has immediately suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused havoc in the sporting world.

That suspension includes the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

In a statement the Canadian Hockey League said:

“The Canadian Hockey League and its three regional leagues in the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and the Western Hockey League, take the health and safety of our players, fans, volunteers, staff, and general public very seriously. CHL President Dan MacKenzie with Commissioners David Branch, Gilles Courteau, and Ron Robison have been monitoring the situation in regards to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) including what local, provincial, and federal health agencies have recommended. Following consultation with medical professionals and meetings today among the CHL Executive Council, and regional league Board of Governors, the CHL announces that the balance of the 2019-20 season and all hockey activity shall be paused immediately until further notice.”

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger as well, players are being allowed to return to their homes.

The CHL is the latest in a series of North American sports leagues including the National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, and National Lacrosse League to postpone their seasons within the last 24 hours.

Through 63 games of the 2019-20 season, the Tigers have compiled a record of 41-19-2-1 and sit in second place in the Central Division with 85 points.
