Petition launched to get Highway 3 twinned

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A petition has been launched advocating for Highway 3 to be twinned just as the province is considering new targeted capital spending to help stimulate the Alberta economy.

The petition launched by the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association is advocating for the province to start moving the project ahead.

“Our southern Alberta economic contribution is significant,” read a statement by the association. “Getting our products to market is a provincial and national benefit as is the importance of ensuring our truckers, farmers, tourists and commuter do not take their life in their hands.”

During Finance Minister Travis Toews visit to the city on Monday, he hinted the province is looking at projects which might not have made the cut on the most recent provincial capital plan but would help stimulate local economies.

But he stopped short of indicating whether the Highway 3 project would be a consideration of the government.

“I’ve heard loud and clear from residents in this region of the importance of Highway 3 and the importance of twinning Highway 3 and I will certainly pass that along to our transportation minister and make sure he is well informed,” said Toews.

Tracy Noullett, Medicine Hat and District Chamber president, brought the issue up directly with the minister during his meeting Monday.

She told CHAT the project would have an economic impact for the region.

“Everybody is pretty unified in our voice that we want it done,” said Noullett. “We think it will lead to us to new markets. We think it’s going to diversify that corridor. It’s going to lead us to new markets. So, overall, if they can see that and they can see the value, I hope they will sign the cheque.”
