MEDICINE HAT — As older computer systems reach the end of their life, the city of Medicine Hat is taking the opportunity to move away from paper based applications for things like building permits and business licences.

Starting on March 23, the city’s new electronic permitting system will go online.

In a release, the city says the new system will enhance existing over the counter service to residents and customers.

The new system will encourage the use of electronic data when people are making applications, either via email, using digital files on a USB drive at the counter or having staff complete electronic applications using hard copy application forms.

Among other benefits, the city says the electronic permit system will reduce the possibility of data entry errors by having information only being entered once into a common database.

Phase One of the system will be available as of March 23.

Upon successful implementation, Phase Two involving the external public online portal will follow in approximately two months.

The city says Phase Two will ease the application process and allow customers to determine the status of their applications.

The E-P-S public online portal will also facilitate future web based transactions.
