Poll suggests MacKay has the lead in Tory leadership race but most undecided

Mar 4, 2020 | 2:14 AM

OTTAWA — A new poll suggests Peter MacKay is the favourite to win the federal Conservative leadership race, though most Canadians haven’t made up their minds in the contest.

The Leger Marketing survey suggests MacKay has the support of 25 per cent of those polled overall, and 38 per cent of those who would vote Conservative.

In second place is Erin O’Toole, with four per cent support overall and nine per cent among people who’d vote for the party in a general election.

Sixty-three per cent of those surveyed said they don’t know who they’d vote for, with 47 per cent of Conservative voters in that camp.

Leger Marketing’s Christian Bourque says the high number of undecideds suggests there is a lot of room for other candidates to grow their support and potentially beat MacKay.

The survey of 1,540 Canadians was conducted online between Feb. 28 and Mar. 2 and cannot be assigned a margin of error because online polls are not considered random.
