Costco Road Woes

Frustration rising among residents over Box Springs Boulevard Potholes

MEDICINE HAT, AB— Box Springs Boulevard near the Costco is a hot topic of conversation among city residents.

With even more potholes forming thanks to another winter of freeze-thaw conditions, it is difficult to find someone in the community who doesn’t want this road fixed. Albert Stark, Box Springs Business Park partner, admits that this road has been a challenge since the beginning.

“If you look at our original construction of the first phase of Box Springs by Costco, that road’s been in place for say ten to twelve years now right. That wasn’t the intention of this road to be not finished in this long of a period. It’s been a complicated issue. In our agreement it basically says we can’t put the final lift, the pavement on until we have eighty percent or so developed.”

The city also acknowledges that this road is in rough shape but says there is not much that can be done on their part because they aren’t in control of development in that area. According to Imran Ahmed, Manager of Development Services, any grievances or damage done to vehicles by these potholes should be taken up with the developer because the city is not liable for any claims.

“Liability is still with the developer because the city has not taken over this road yet. So anybody whose vehicle is damaged because of these potholes, they are supposed to call the developer’s office and ask them to connect them with their insurance.”

Residents have taken to social media to share their frustrations. Comments such as “that road is horrible, needs to be replaced” and “there is one pothole” near Costco gas bar “that almost ate my car” have been posted on Facebook.

No timeline was given by either the city or developer as to when there may be a permanent fix.
