Students showcase science projects

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The hallways at the Centre for Academic and Personal Excellence (CAPE) school were full of excitement today as it was finally time for this year’s science fair presentations to get underway.

Students grades four through nine were eager to display their hard work and explain their scientific findings to their fellow peers, teachers, and judges. Some began working on their projects as early as September and have been collecting data and researching under the supervision and assistance of their teachers and scientists in the city. Grade seven student Fatema Riaz, who won second place in her division in the biology category for her project on yeast fermentation, says she loved a chance to further explore and study science.

“I’ve always been interested in microbiology and this just seemed like the perfect project for me. So I tried different PH’s and saw how that would affect yeast fermentation and I tried adding salt and saw how that affected it” she said. “I had a lot of fun with science fair.”

The science fair happens every alternate year at the school and the students are challenged with finding a scientific topic they can research, collect data on and then present their thesis and analysis in front of their classroom. Winners from each division move on to the next round to be evaluated by guest judges. According to school superintendent Teresa Di Ninno, these kinds of activities give students a chance to build upon many of their skills simultaneously.

“The expectation from all of us here is a learning experience that is meaningful, that will last, that is holistic in nature so that they gain knowledge and skills in many, many areas” she said. “That can be applied in all other areas of their schooling or outside of their schooling. Social skills, public speaking skills, self-confidence all falls into that same area. Science fair is a holistic approach to learning and teaching.”

From yeast fermentation to migraines, science fair this year showcased some of the brightest young scientists in Medicine Hat.
