Province commits $19 billion for infrastructure spending

EDMONTON, AB — The province is committing $19 billion for three years for infrastructure spending.

According to the budget a total $5.6 billion will go towards direct municipal support, with $2.7 billion set aside for capital maintenance and renewal of public infrastructure.

In addition, $2.5 billion will be set aside for health facilities, $2.3 billion will go towards roads and bridges and $1.5 billion will be put towards schools.

Infrastructure projects for the Medicine Hat region were not listed in the capital plan.

The Municipal Sustainability Initiative, which helps municipalities receive funding for infrastructure, is set at $963 million for 2020-21, before falling to $897 million in 2021-22, the final year of the program.
