MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat College has announced a partnership with Northern Lakes College to help expand access to online learning.

According to Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO of the college, the partnership between Medicine Hat and the school based in Slave Lake, has been in the works for the past six months.

“When we started undergoing out strategic planning process, the thing that we heard was that students wanted flexible pathways, as well as how to increase access to our programming,” he said. “A natural partner in the system was Northern Lakes College. They offer their programs with supported distance learning, and we have the opportunity to support the delivery of those programs to students within our region.”

The partnership will see Medicine Hat College begin implementing more supported distance learning programs from Northern Lakes. These programs will allow students to complete courses in their home communities, without having to come to campus in Medicine Hat or Brooks.

Shufflebotham says the partnership will benefit both institutions.

“It’s important to partner with institutions that have like mandates,” he said. “Northern Lakes College, for example, has a stewardship mandate, similar to us. Our cultures are the same, the idea is we want to support student access, so it was really easy to partner with them.”

A final decision on what programs will be offered has not yet been finalized, said Shufflebotham, but he adds they will be available in Fall 2020.
