Medicine Hat man facing additional sexual assault charges

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man previously charged with sexual assault is facing additional sexual assault charges.

Claudio Tovar-Aguilar, 53, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of attempted sexual assault, three counts of administer an overpowering drug in order to commit an indictable offence, and one count of unlawful confinement.

He was previously arrested on attempted sexual assault charges on December 21 after allegedly trying to force a woman into a vehicle near the Medicine Hat TePee.

Following the arrest, police released Tovar-Aguilar’s photo, saying they were looking for any additional victims.

In the release, police say they’ve learned of two alleged assaults which occurred on July 13, 2019. Two adult females allege they were given a drug prior to the assault which affected their ability to give consent.

In addition, police allege Tovar-Aguilar attempted to sexually assault a third woman on December 15. The victim is also alleged to have been drugged and was also allegedly held against her will.

Adam Gregory, acting staff sergeant in the police service’s Major Crime Unit, says they continue to investigate.

“Mr. Tovar-Aguilar’s photo is being released again, and again we just ask the community that should there be other victims, or have any other information in regards to this investigation, to please contact our non-emergency line,” he said.

Tovar-Aguilar remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday.
