Snow Survey

City snow & ice control open house tomorrow and online survey

Feb 24, 2020 | 1:31 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City crews were out at 4 o’clock this morning to address the snow and ice that came through during the night.

Four graders were out, sanders, and plow trucks were on main category 1 roads and hills.

Then around 8 AM, more crews were clearing sidewalks and additional sanders were out.

Municipal Engineer Michael Knight says this was a pretty typical snowfall.

“We do use sometimes a liquid de-icer before freezing rain or icing events. With snowfall that we see like this, that treatment isn’t one of the best options because snowfall will dilute the solution that’s on the road and create more ice. So that’s typically used as a freezing rain response.”

That de-icer was not used for this snowfall.

Meantime, you can have your say on the city’s snow and ice control during an open house tomorrow.

A review is underway, and feedback will be collected from the public to see what’s working, challenges, education on current practices, and levels of service.

It takes place Tuesday, February 25 from 4:30-7:30 PM at the Municipal Works building at 188 Kiping Street SE.

The survey is available by visiting the city’s link.
