Cubs even series with Generals at one a piece

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After a 6-to-nothing blowout loss to the Generals in Cochrane Saturday, the Medicine Hat Cubs came roaring back less than 24 hours later with a drubbing of its own taking a 5 to 1 win to even the second-round Heritage Junior B playoff series at one a piece.

The game was close through the first two periods with the opening frame ending tied at one a piece before the Cubs opened things up in a chippy third which saw no fewer than four players from each squad jamming into the sin bin at one point.

Cubs coach JD Gaetan says the two teams have been building up a rivalry during the regular season, leading up to Sunday night’s second game of the best-of-seven series.

“It was definitely needed tonight,” said Gaetan of the win at the Kinplex. “We had a rough one in Cochrane. Mostly our start, we got off to a slow start. I thought we played better in the second and third up in Cochrane so I’d used that as a bit of momentum carrying into the game today.”

The Cubs saw Desmond Crawford, Brayden Anderson, Austin Klimosko and Mason Fischer each pot a goal before Crawford netted his second to round out the scoring on the night.

But it was goalie Dawsen Savage who took the first star of the night honours stopping all but one shot.

“It was huge for us because you don’t want to go down two, nothing in a series,” said Savage of the win. “Getting put down by two is not where you want to be.”

Game 3 takes place in Cochrane on Thursday with the two teams back at the Kinplex Friday night.
