City says it can handle landfill hour changes

MEDICINE HAT, AB — City officials say they don’t expect to see any major impacts from the decision to reduce hours at the Medicine Hat landfill.

On Thursday, the city announced the landfill would no longer be open on Sundays or on major holidays, effectively immediately.

Jason Storch, landfill supervisor with the city, says they expect staff to be able to handle the changes

“We have the capacity to handle the volume of customers and waste that come into the facility on a daily basis,” he said. “We realize that in the winter months, the landfill is closed on Sundays, so we’re hoping that whatever people are doing in the winter months, they’re able to continue doing in the summer as well.”

Storch says the decision was made as part of the city’s Financially Fit for the Future initiative, with city departments being tasked to find savings.

The environmental utilities department, which oversees the landfill, found Sundays were the slowest day at the landfill, both in terms of customers and tonnage of waste dropped off.

The landfill is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
