New initiative aimed at improving public transparency: MHPS

Feb 20, 2020 | 5:37 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service has launched a new initiative on its Facebook page, with the goal of keeping citizens informed about crime trends and what officers are focusing on for the coming week.

Every Wednesday morning on its Facebook page, the police services posts information discussed during its weekly intelligence meeting.

“We determined it would be better off for the community and the officers to have a more timely response to some of the intelligence we got,” said Inspector Brent Secondiak.

The information posted includes addresses where alleged criminal activity is occurring that officers will be monitoring. It also includes information on crime trends observed in the region.

Secondiak says the initiative helps improve public transparency

“We try and let the public know what we’re doing all of the time, and plus, it’s really important that the community knows that there are so many proactive activities going on with our officers all of the time, so we’ve been very pleased with the response,” he said.

Secondiak says the initiative will become a weekly feature.
