NDP finance critic says UCP economic plan has “failed”

MEDICINE HAT, AB – NDP finance critic Shannon Phillips was in the city on Friday talking to residents about the budget and health care in the province with the provincial budget likely only weeks away.

And while she didn’t have much good to say about Budget 2019, Phillips isn’t expecting this budget to be any better.

“I expect this budget to be much worse that the one before,” she said. “The reason for that is that Jason Kenney’s economic plan has failed.”

Budget 2019 had three priorities, according to the provincial government; Getting Albertans back to work, making life better for Albertans and standing up for Alberta.

But Phillips pointed out, “we have done nothing but lose jobs. (Premier Kenney) has not created the jobs he promised. The economy is stalled and we are going backwards in a number of ways. Unemployment is up and people are leaving the work force. It’s really quite dire.”

The Alberta legislature will be resuming on Feb. 25 with a throne speech.

It’s anticipated Budget 2020 will be introduced shortly after the spring session begins.
