MEDICINE HAT, AB — Willie Desjardins is being recognized for his time in university sports.

The Medicine Hat Tigers’ head coach and general manager has recently been named to the Canada West Hall of Fame.

Desjardins spent five years as a student-athlete with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. During his time with the team, he was a two-time male athlete of the year at the University (1981, 1983), and helped the team capture the 1983 University Cup. He was also named the 1982-83 Canada West Player of the Year.

Desjardins also coached the University of Calgary Dinos from 1985-1994, taking over as head coach in 1988. As a head coach, the Dinos won the Canada West title in 1990 and compiled a 113-44-11 record in conference games.

Desjardins is among 100 inductees this year. The Hall of Fame is inducting 100 athletes to mark the 100th anniversary of the first university sport championship in Western Canada.
