Future of greenhouse development – cannabis, vegetable – discussed at city council

Feb 3, 2020 | 9:32 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city moved first reading of a bylaw for a new inter-municipal development agreement that would establish a greenhouse corridor while the mayor dismissed rumours regarding the future of Aurora Cannabis’ greenhouse during Monday’s city council meeting.

Addressing the rumours swirling around further production roll backs at Medicine Hat’s Aurora Sun facility, Mayor Ted Clugston said city officials contacted the company last week.

“They said status quo as to what we told you before, being six bays opening out of 36 and maybe 100 employees not the five-, six-, seven-hundred employees that they were talking about with the eventual idea they would open the entire building,” said Clugston.

As for greenhouse of the vegetable variety, council passed first reading of a bylaw to replace its current inter-municipal development plan (IDP) with a new one which will include a greenhouse corridor in Cypress County near the city airport.

Coun. Kris Samraj says talks continue between Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Cypress County regarding the development agreement and the public from the three municipalities are invited to attend a public meeting on it later this month.

Specifically in regards to the greenhouse corridor, Samraj said, “people are concerned about light impacting near the airport so this has a way of putting in guidelines to specify there has to be light curtains around the tops of the greenhouses.

“It also indicates to the city that we won’t put residential development near that area as well.”

The public meeting on the IDP takes place on Feb. 27 at the Esplanade.
