Volunteer connection website active in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A website that links people with organizations that need volunteers is now active in Medicine Hat.

Now, a local committee is hoping Hatters will take advantage of the site, either by posting volunteer opportunities, or taking advantage of the opportunities posted.

Just Serve was launched by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2012, and lists volunteer opportunities in communities around the world. It arrived in Medicine Hat six months ago.

“It’s meant to be not affiliated with religion or anything, it’s just a service to the community,” said Donovan Nunweiler, a member of the Just Serve committee locally.

So far in Medicine Hat, Nunweiler says approximately 30 organizations have listed volunteer opportunities. Organizations with opportunities currently listed include the City of Medicine Hat’s Cyber Seniors program, the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank, and the Red Cross

“It brings volunteer organizations looking for volunteers together with those potentially looking for volunteer opportunities,” said Nunweiler. “It’s basically the middle man, so to speak, for people looking for opportunities to serve, but don’t know where to find them or where to go, it’s the one site that will allow posting and opportunities to be advertised.”

Nunweiler says they’re hoping the site will eventually catch on in the city, and help build volunteer pools for organizations and events.

“Once this becomes quite familiar to people in the community, we’re hoping it catches on like wildfire, and it really brings those who are looking for opportunities to serve, and the organizations in need, just to be able to facilitate bringing them together easier,” he said.

The site can be accessed here.
