Personal appearance ordered in child porn case

Medicine Hat, AB – The former director of the City Centre Development Agency has been ordered to make a personal appearance on child pornography charges after failing to enter a plea at his Thursday court appearance.

Wayne Smith, 65, was charged in June 2019 on allegations of accessing and possessing child pornography.

Smith was ordered to have the next steps taken on Thursday’s court date though counsel requested an adjournment, resulting in the judge ordering his personal appearance at his next court date set for Jan. 30.

The charges post-date Smith’s tenure at the CCDA which was marked by allegations of sexual harassment at the agency-run theatre.

Those allegations were found to be unsubstantiated by a review conducted by the CCDA board at the time as well as the Alberta Human Rights Commission complaint filed being dismissed.
