Tennis Club hosts annual holiday tournament

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Members of the city’s tennis community gathered for a friendly competition on Saturday.

The Renato Franchetto Winter Classic Tennis Tournament took over the Cypress Centre Fieldhouse throughout the day Saturday, featuring a total of 20 players playing in teams.

In the open division, which was contested under a round-robin format, the team of Raymond Weich and Lyle Garrecht came away with first place during the event.

According to club president Ken Clement, Weich and Garrecht went undefeated in four round-robin games.

Jin Shin and Niall Weich finished in second place, while Boris Holan and Peter O’Driscoll took home third place.

In the intermediate division, Francisco Valenzuela and Codie Uitvlugt defeated David Schnare and Lily Laurent in the championship by a score of 8-5. In the consolation, Sheila Reinheller and Noel Thomas defeated Doris Deminick and Gary Laurent 6-5.

The tournament is held every year in December in memory of Franchetto, a long-time club member who passed away in 2014.
