Grande Prairie introduces new autonomous snow-clearing robot

“So, this is an initiative of the city, looking at ways to maximize our services while at the same time trying to keep our costs down, and this is one of those initiatives. Obviously, we see across the world that automation is coming to help enhance these services, service provision and business provisions.”

The city says the RT-1000 will bring a higher level of service without any jobs being lost.

The machine is equipped with various safety features, including 360-degree cameras and LiDAR, and is GPS-controlled.

The RT-1000 can also be remotely monitored through a mobile app where progress and cameras can be viewed.

If something is detected to be in the way of the robot, the RT-1000 will stop and only continue once it the camera footage is reviewed, and it is deemed safe by a person.

It can clear up to 25 kilometres on one tank of fuel and is also features a lawn-mowing attachment that can cut up to 18 acres on one fuel tank.

Tarant says while the robot does have some limitations, it will be an asset in the winter.

“It’s not going to completely take over all our snow-clearing operations by any means, but it’s just a way to enhance the current operations. So, you know, one of the advantages is we can run it at different times, we don’t necessarily have to be tied to a specific shift and it can be done autonomously.”

Grande Prairie is hoping the RT-1000 will then be able to plow, sand, and salt all the Muskoseepi Park Trails.
