MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local oilfield company has donated thousands of dollars to the local Ronald McDonald House.

STEP Energy Services announced they are donating $22,571 to the Medicine Hat Ronald McDonald House. A total of $11,285.90 was raised by the Medicine Hat office, which was matched by the head office in Calgary.

“Every year, every STEP Energy base in Canada chooses a local charity to support, and we raise money for that charity over the course of the fall and the winter,” said Tamara Lich, base administrator with the Medicine Hat STEP Energy Services.

Lich says Ronald McDonald House was chosen by employees due to it being new in the community, and also because several employees, including herself, have used the house in the past in other cities.

Lich says she used the home in Saskatoon when her daughter was born premature, staying there for several weeks.

The money for the donation was raised in house by employees, through donations, raffles and staff events. They also received donations from other companies, including a $3,000 donation from Fortress Fabrication that was matched by the office in Calgary.

Lich says she was “blown away” by the amount raised.

“With the way the economy has been, and it has affected us all, so for our employees and these businesses to step up and raise this kind of money in this kind of environment is mind-boggling,” she said.

The company will present the donation to the Ronald McDonald House at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Ronald McDonald House is currently scheduled to open in Medicine Hat in March 2020.
