First influenza death confirmed in South Zone: AHS

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The number of flu deaths in Alberta has doubled in the past week.

According to the most recent numbers provided by Alberta Health Services, a total of six Albertans have died from laboratory confirmed influenza as of December 14, up from three in the previous report released last week.

Three deaths have been reported in Edmonton, while one death has been reported in northern Alberta, Calgary and the South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

A total of 1,328 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza have been confirmed in Alberta, with 671 of those cases in Calgary. In the South Zone, a total of 123 cases of flu have been discovered.

Calgary also leads the province in hospitalizations due to laboratory-confirmed influenza. Of the 241 cases so far, 117 are located in Calgary, while 86 hospitalizations took place in Edmonton, 19 in central Alberta, 11 in northern Alberta and eight in the South Zone.

So far this season, 1,249,425 doses of influenza vaccine have been administered to Albertans.
