Lethbridge College named one of Canada’s 23 top “healthy workplaces”

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College (LC) is one of just three employers in Alberta to be recognized by the organization, Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month.

It celebrates large and small employers that are committed to providing a healthy and safe place for their workers.

LC President and CEO Dr. Paula Burns says health and wellness are a priority at the highest level.

“Receiving this award is a great accomplishment and I hope it echoes the way that our students and employees feel about the institution. We care about our entire community and encourage them to put their own wellness first. A lot of work goes into making sure our people are supported in whatever way they need.”

LC’s Wellness Services and Occupational Health and Safety Teams are typically the ones who spearhead efforts to improve well being, but the academic centres themselves do their part as well.

“On any given day, visitors to the college might find a wellness fair, showcasing in-house services and community partners; workshops on topics such as suicide awareness, overdose prevention and laughter yoga; and noon-hour floor hockey or basketball for staff who want to burn off steam,” reads a media release from LC. “During final exams and mid-terms, you’re likely to see volunteers bringing dogs or cats to campus so stressed students and staff can decompress with some quick pet therapy.”

Health Promotion Coordinator Laura Morden says other amenities such as the fitness centre, gymnasium, and paths to the coulees right on campus are also ways they encourage physical activity.

Staff at LC started undertaking mandatory training last year for programs like mental health, resiliency, and first response to struggling colleagues or students.

As well, LC is one of 17 post-secondary schools in Canada taking part in the Dimensions program, a national pilot project that assesses its diversity and inclusion efforts.

Other employers recognized by Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month in the province include Alberta Blue Cross (based in Edmonton) and Travel Alberta (based in Calgary).
