New look to old pastime

Medicine Hat, AB – The Medicine Hat Board Game Guy rolled the dice when a year ago he set up a travelling event roadshow which visited local businesses and enticed new players to updated versions of an old pastime.

But a year into it, Steven Durk said the community has responded positively.

On Saturday, Durk hosted his second Ticket to Ride tournament at the Medicine Hat library and will be featuring his wares again on Dec. 17 at the Medicine Hat Brewing Company.

He says board games never really went away but, “I think over time we’ve seen board games evolve.”

While the games like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit have often dominated the board game world, Durk said new and dynamic games are bringing people together at a time when the online world has a tendency of keeping them apart.

“These games present new obstacles, new decisions for players to make. So, I don’t think anything has gone away but you are seeing a resurgence in games.”
