Bandits dominate in shutout win over Olds on Teddy Bear night

Dec 8, 2019 | 1:27 PM

BROOKS, AB – It took only 92 seconds for the Teddy Bears to rain down on the ice of the Centennial Regional Arena as the Brooks Bandits (31-1-1) dominated the Olds Grizzlys 10-0 for their 7th straight win.

Goaltender Ethan Barwick (St Albert, AB) made 14 saves for his second shutout of the season, while forward Randy Hernández (Miami, FL) picked the top corner of the Olds net in the opening minuntes to score the Teddy Bear goal.

Brooks began the game on the powerplay as Olds was called for delay of game after not exiting the ice before time expired in the warmup. Hernández’s goal was the quickest Teddy Bear goal in Bandit history at the 1:32 mark. The stuffed animals were collected on the ice and handed over to Scotiabank Smiles for Christmas campaign, benefiting local children.

The Bandits kept coming, as forward Taylor Makar (Calgary, AB) finished off a Sean Chisholm pass in the right circle to make it 2-0 just three minutes into the game. Then at the 11:58 mark, forward James McIsaac (Winninpeg, MB) one-timed a Makar pass to put the Bandits up 3-0. Brooks outshot Olds 14-4 in the 1st period.

Brooks began the 2nd period on the powerplay and needed only 24 seconds for captain Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) to finish off Hernández setup to make it 4-0. The Bandits then went on the penalty kill, but scored again. Defenceman Tim Rego (Mansfield, MA) scored on a breakaway, backhanding it past Grizzly goaltender Ty Marcinkowski to put Brooks up 5-0.

Lee added another at 8:28, followed by a Devin Phillips (Raleigh, North Carolina) goal off an offensive zone faceoff win to put the Bandits up 7-0.

The third period saw forward Trey Thomas knock in a puck at the 2:12 point, followed by another Hernández goal at 7:37 on the powerplay on a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Ethan Woodward, the Grizzly backup who started the third period. The 10th goal of the night came with just over three minutes to play, on the second of the night from Rego.

Final shots were 43-14 Brooks.

The Bandits head on the road for their next two games. They’ll visit the Grande Prairie Storm on Friday (Dec. 13 @ 7:30 PM), followed by a trip to Whitecourt to face the Wolverines on Saturday (Dec. 14 @ 7:30 PM). Both games will be broadcast live on Real Country 105.7 FM.
