Mohawks preaching ‘by committee’ approach to this season

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Chad Watson’s been around the game long enough to know what fuels a successful team.

He also knows how a club full of potential can struggle if certain pieces to the puzzle try fitting themselves into unnecessary locations.

That’s why, as he enters his 13th season as head coach of the Hat High Mohawks senior boys club, Watson needs every player to buy into their respective roles.

Seven grade 12’s make up this year’s Mohawks squad, who open the 2019-20 campaign on Tuesday night, hosting the Raymond Comets. Seven returning members were also on last year’s squad which earned an ASAA provincial berth.

But Watson isn’t counting his chips quite yet. Although there are several returning pieces to the line-up, there are also new faces that are taking on new-found responsibilities.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Watson to hear more about this year’s team and what his definition of “success” looks like.

Plus, Grade 12 Ethan Egert, who earned a South Zone 1st Team All-Star nod last spring, discusses the bitter-sweet nature in playing his final year, and what he hopes to accomplish ahead of graduation.
