Notley kicked out of legislature for rest of day

EDMONTON, AB — Alberta Opposition Leader Rachel Notley has been kicked out of the legislature for the rest of the day following a refusal to apologize for comments made regarding Bill 22.

Bill 22, which was announced Monday, includes a plan to “merge and consolidate the Office of the Election Commissioner into the office of the Chief Electoral Officer.” The bill, if passed, would terminate the contract of Election Commissioner Lorne Gibson.

Gibson’s office has been investigating the 2017 leadership race of the United Conservative Party, and has issued over $200,000 in fines for illegal campaign donations.

During Question Period, Notley accused the United Conservative Party House Leader Jason Nixon of misleading the house about the bill. Speaker Nathan Cooper demanded Notley apologize, and she refused, prompting her to be removed from the legislature.
