Medicine Hat, AB – Across Alberta, people are celebrating Metis Week,

A week to recognize the important role that Métis people have played in the founding and development of the province, and the contributions they continue to make.

To celebrate, the Metis Nation Local 8 and the Miywasin Friendship Centre has been hosting events such as a flag raising, fiddle lessons, and an elders appreciation banquet.

“Metis Week is a time for us to celebrate and host our events that are open to the community so they learn more about Metis cultural and the Metis community,” said Jeannette Hansen, the executive director at Miywasin and local 8’s president.

They wrapped up the week with Thursday’s Culture Night at the Esplanade.

The event will have a bannock tasting contest and a Metis Kitchen Party with music and traditional jigging.

While Hansen says that sharing the events and culture with the community is important, it’s also about their own celebration.

“It’s for us as well. It’s to keep our culture alive and pass it on to the young generation. So we keep doing. We keep promoting and living our culture,” she smiled.
