Rattlers’ Suchy dives her way into ACAC volleyball record book

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Throughout her ACAC career, Shaya Suchy has proven herself as one of the province’s top defensive talents all-time.

On Saturday night in front of friends and family at the ‘Snake Pit,’ the fifth-year Rattlers libero recorded her name in the ACAC record books with one solitary dig.

Suchy made a stab at a loose ball on the final point of Saturday’s third set against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, recording her 1,245th dig to break the ACAC career record held by four-year Briercrest Clipper Brooke Peterson.

The Guernsey, Saskatchewan product needed 22 digs to break the five-year record in ACAC play, finishing her night with 27 digs to move comfortably into first place and help the Rattlers to a four-set victory (25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19) over the Kodiaks.

With 16 games still remaining in the ACAC regular season, Suchy will have the opportunity to open a sizable lead in the league’s record books as well.

Amber Stigter was tops again with 14 kills for MHC on Saturday night, while Dryden Gris also contributed 11 kills offensively.

Saturday’s win completed a weekend sweep of the Kodiaks for MHC, recording a straight-sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-18) victory in Lethbridge on Friday night off 11 kills and 10 digs by Brooke Christie.

The Rattlers women’s volleyball team has now won their last four matches in a row improving to a 4-4 record, good enough for fourth place in the South Division.

As for the men’s squad, the first two matches of the post-Mark Porter era didn’t go as planned as they were swept over the weekend by Lethbridge College.

After dropping a four-sets tilt (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21) on Friday night down the road in Lethbridge, the Rattlers were beaten in three sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-18) in the rematch Saturday.

KeAndre Evans and Aleksa Zivic both had 11 kills in the loss for MHC, though no Rattlers player was able to hit double-digits in digs on the night.

Zivic was the standout of the weekend for the Rattlers men’s team with 12 kills the previous night, followed by Dexter Mackie’s 10 kills on Friday.

Spiralling down the ACAC standings since their opening weekend of the season, the Rattlers have lost their last seven in a row and are second last in their division.

Both of MHC’s volleyball teams will stay home next weekend, playing a pair of games each against Red Deer College starting with Friday’s games at 6:00 and 8:00 pm at the ‘Snake Pit.’

Finding their footing

After a rough start to the 2019-20 season, the Rattlers women’s basketball teams seems to have found a groove entering mid-November.

Over the weekend, the Rattlers picked up four out of a possible four points against the SAIT Trojans and Lethbridge College Kodiaks to record their second and third victories of the season.

Morgan Muir knocked down a game-high 22 points for the Rattlers in their 70-41 win over the Trojans at home on Friday night, setting the stage for another big offensive night in Lethbridge.

Playing 33 minutes against the Kodiaks, Kate Rozdeba posted game-highs in both points (22) and rebounds (12) to earn player of the game honours and giving the Rattlers their first win streak of the season 61-50.

Paige Cooper chipped in 15 points from the field Saturday, while Muir added onto her season-best performance from Friday with 11 points for MHC.

The victories pull the Rattlers even to a 3-3 record to begin the season, currently ranked sixth in the ACAC South Division with six points.

A slow start to the season continued over the weekend for the MHC men’s basketball team meanwhile, dropping both of their meetings against the Trojans and Kodiaks.

SAIT’s Calvin Chambers dropped 28 points on Friday night at the ‘Snake Pit’ in an 86-66 victory over MHC, while Kieron Burgess and Arthur Rosa were the lone Rattlers to reach double-digits in points.

Despite getting off to a 28-18 lead over Lethbridge College on Saturday night, the Rattlers sputtered down the stretch and were humbled by a 94-66 final by the Kodiaks.

This time it was Chase Bohne torching MHC for 26 points, equalling Medicine Hat’s top-two combined scorers in Rosa and Jevon Fray-Woodbine.

The loss marks the Rattlers’ fifth in a row, dropping to a 1-5 record through six games for a seventh place showing in their division.

Just one road game next weekend for the Rattlers basketball teams respectively, visiting the St. Mary’s University Lightning in Calgary on Friday with games at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
