RCMP responding to serious collision on Trans-Canada Highway

MEDICINE HAT, AB — RCMP and emergency officials are responding to a serious motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway.

According to Redcliff RCMP, the collision happened at 12:46 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Trans Canada highway at Range Road 101, west of Suffield, and involved two semis.

The crash closed the highway at the area of the collision for almost seven hours. A release from the RCMP said the highway reopened by 7:30 p.m.

Eastbound traffic was diverted near Range Road 100, according to a release from RCMP. Traffic was at a standstill for several hours while police worked.

One of the trucks appears to have flipped on its side as a result of the collision, and police say the collision was a result of one of the semis rear ending the other one.

The two drivers of the trucks have been taken to hospital with serious injuries. One was transported by ground ambulance, while the other was transported by HALO Air Ambulance. A third passenger was treated on scene and later released.

“My understanding is that the driver of the vehicle that was rear-ended, that driver has some very serious injuries,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Maxwell with Redcliff RCMP. “Which is to my understanding why HALO would be here. They will be transported to hospital and looked after.”

RCMP investigators are en route to the scene.
