Brooks RCMP warning public of phone scam

Oct 17, 2019 | 5:25 PM

BROOKS, AB — RCMP in Brooks say multiple residents are being targeted by fraudulent calls from a spoofed number associated with the Brooks RCMP.

RCMP say over the last few days, they have been notified of residents receiving calls from people claiming to be from the RCMP, and saying their Social Insurance Numbers have been compromised and they needed to give the caller personal information. Many of the calls came Thursday, according to a news release.

RCMP say they will never ask you for money over the phone, and will never tell you to pay for anything using Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.

The RCMP also say they will never tell you to pay money or threaten to arrest you for tax fraud, and will never ask for your Social Insurance Number.

Residents are reminded to be aware of the calls, and to not provide any personal information or pay any money.

If you have been the recipient of one of the calls, contact Brooks RCMP at 403-794-4400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
