City announces short-term contract for home recycling pickup

Oct 16, 2019 | 9:39 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has announced a new company has signed a short-term contract to collect residential recycling.

Green For Life Environmental Inc., a company based in Toronto, will begin collecting residential recycling in Medicine Hat starting on November 18. The contract will run until January 31, 2020.

The city says there will be no change in recycling rates for residents with the new contract in place.

In September, the city and Can Pak Environmental ended their agreement, with the city saying the two sides were unable to come to an agreement on pricing for the program. Can Pak had been running the recycling program since its inception in 2018.

Can Pak is still collecting recycling until the new contract takes effect.

The city is still looking for a company to handle residential recycling on a long-term basis, and they anticipate a successful contractor will be selected by January 2020.
