Storm moving away after record amounts of snow

Snow day for Prairie Rose, but public and Catholic schools open today

Sep 30, 2019 | 6:25 AM

MEDICINE HAT — A storm that dumped record amounts of snow on southern Alberta is moving away.

But it will still be a snow day for most students in the Prairie Rose school division, as all schools, except for those in Redcliff, are closed today and busses are not running.

All schools in the Medicine Hat public and Medicine Hat Catholic systems are open today.

The snow is forecast to end this afternoon, with another 2 cm for Medicine Hat, and up to 5 additional centimeters in the Suffield and Brooks regions.

The storm left as much as 100 centimeters of snow in the area of Waterton Lakes National Park, with Lethbridge getting 50 centimeters.

The nasty weather was also felt south of us, as Great Falls had over 35 centimeters, and some parts of Montana were under a state of emergency.

Travel outside of Medicine Hat was not recommended on Sunday afternoon.

There were multiple collisions and vehicles in the ditch reported along the Trans Canada highway between Redcliff and Brooks.

City police had a few accidents due to the snow, but no injuries.

There were no reports of downed power lines or broken trees as of 6 am this morning.
