Bandits win 6-4 in Camrose, move to 2-0

Sep 15, 2019 | 10:57 AM

CAMROSE, AB – Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, B.C.) and Brayden Krieger (Elora, ON) both had two-goal nights, as the Brooks Bandits (2-0) kept their undefeated start to the 2019-20 AJHL season going with a 6-4 win in Camrose on Saturday night.

The Bandits rode a five-goal first period to the victory, outshooting the Kodiaks 39-26 in the game. They now sit alone in first place in the AJHL South division.

Thomas’ first of the game came just 1:54 in, when a feed in front from Ethan Lund (Calgary, AB) was tipped home by the off-season acquisition to give Brooks the early advantage. At the 3:15 mark, Reilly Connors (Madison, CT) slid home a low shot on a 2-on-1 set up by Thomas for a 2-0 lead.

Krieger then scored twice in the span of just 2:20, the first off a setup by fellow former Listowel Cyclone Jake Lee (Owen Sound, ON) at 8:26, and the second a shot on the power play at 10:46. After that, Camrose pulled starter Griffin Bowerman in favour of backup goalie Cole Tisdale.

Camrose got closer when Cody Laskosky scored on a breakaway at 12:21, but Tim Rego (Mansfield, MA) sniped a top corner shot off the rush at 15:45 to make it 5-1 heading into the first intermission.

Camrose stormed back in the second, with Jacob Kendall scoring on a two-on-one at 2:33, and Laskosky notching his second of the game at 5:17 on another breakaway.

But Brooks held the Kodiaks to just five shots in the third, and got a measure of insurance at 2:38 when Thomas finished off a two-on-one pass from Chris Pappas (Toronto, ON), flinging a puck top shelf as he was tripped up, sliding into the corner boards and celebrating from the seat of his pants.

Connor Brock scored for Camrose at 16:59, but it was as close as the Kodiaks would get. Pierce Charleson (Aurora, ON) made 22 saves on 26 shots for his second straight win.

The Bandits will head back to Brooks for their Western Financial Home Opener on Friday night at the CRA as they host the Drumheller Dragons. Puck drop is at 7 PM with a pregame tailgate party in the CRA parking lot from 5:30 – 6:30. Tickets are available online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
