BROOKS, AB — A 21-year-old man from Calgary has been charged with dangerous driving after going more than 100 kilometres over the speed limit last week.

Brooks RCMP released details on the charges on Wednesday. The stop occurred on August 31.

An officer was conducting patrols on the highway at Second Street west in the city. The officer observed two vehicles travelling west at a high rate of speed, with one vehicle being recorded on radar at 219 kilometres per hour.

The vehicle was stopped at the entrance to Brooks. Officers say there were two passengers in the vehicle at the time, including a youth. The driver was allegedly racing the other vehicle at the time of the stop, and the highway was wet at the time due to rain.

The driver has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance (vehicle). He will appear in Brooks Provincial Court on October 9.

The identity of the other driver is still under investigation.
