Baby step for solar project

Medicine Hat, AB – As far as utility-grade renewable energy projects go, the granting of a development permit on a parcel of land containing an old tailings pond is a baby step in seeing such a project come to fruition. But it’s still a move forward for what could become the country’s largest solar farm.

The Saamis Solar project would be at least partially placed on top of a capped phosphogypsum tailings pond left over from a fertilizer plant which operated between the 1950s and 1980s next to Methanex. The project would utilize a system so as to not disturb the contaminated site below the ground.

The city’s Municipal Planning Commission approved the development permit for the site in June with council receiving the MPC’s report during their meeting this week.

According to the project’s proponent DP Energy’s website, the project would be a 200 megawatt capacity solar facility. However, the project is not listed on the Alberta Electric System Operator project list nor has it received approval through the Alberta Utilities Commission.
