Silver the colour for Suhai & Team Alberta at U16 national tournament

BEDFORD, NS – Every so often it seems a baseball team’s offence will be stymied by an opposing pitcher that can not be solved.

Unfortunately for Medicine Hat’s Andie Suhai and the rest of Team Alberta, that red-hot pitcher came in the gold medal final of the 16U Girls Invitational national tournament.

Team Alberta was only able to connect on five hits against British Columbia ace Tess Sawkins on Sunday afternoon, settling for a silver medal at nationals with a 6-0 shutout loss.

Suhai, who played right field for Alberta in the gold medal tilt, went 1-2 at the plate and was one of just four players wearing the black and blue to register a hit off Sawkins.

British Columbia took an early 2-0 lead over Alberta in the first inning with back-to-back balks from pitcher Tyra Stanich allowing a pair of runs to cross home plate.

That lead was further extended in the second inning with an RBI triple from Juliette Kladko to make it 3-0, before Kladko herself scored on a ground out from Ella Duncan-Reda.

Team B.C. capped off the frame with a big RBI double by Raine Padgham to give the west coast girls a five-run lead after just two innings.

Suhai’s single came in the top of the fourth inning with a line drive to right field, however she was later picked off a first base by Sawkins.

British Columbia’s final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth with a fly out to Suhai in right field, however Sawkins was able to get on her horse and tag up to make it a 6-0 game.

Sawkins was able to get Alberta to go three up, three down in the seventh inning to give British Columbia the shutout and the national U16 championship.

She ended her gold medal game with no runs allowed on five hits and eight strikeouts to her credit.

Suhai meanwhile finished her tournament with six hits in six games and scored a pair of runs in Alberta’s 10-9 semi-final victory over Nova Scotia 1 to go along with her silver medal.
